We purchased the Hoover F7412-900 to replace an old and failing Bissell we’d used for many years. Be aware like -most- other Hoover SteamVac models, the only steam you will get is from the hot tap water you put into it and not from a heating element built-in. This shampooer is built solid and should hold up to abuse and routine use over the years. I rated it only 3 stars because the elongated and very flat vacuum passage that sucks up the dirty water as you shampoo clogs easily and quickly, especially if you have dogs and embedded hair on your carpets as we do. I noticed it wasn’t sucking up the water like it should have, leaving dirty streaks behind to have to do again. While we vacuumed our carpets aggressively before shampooing, used the recommended Hoover shampoo (Home Depot carries it in large sizes), the shampooer simply can’t do it’s work once it’s vacuum passages clog. Removing the clogs requires a thin paint scrapper or other thin tool to reach into the recesses of the vacuum housing to grab the hair chunks trapped there and it -will- happen again over and over and all too quickly. Even extensive dry vacuuming won’t remove all dog hair while shampooing using water will always tend to lift off hair that is well bonded to the carpet (and vacuuming can’t get up). Thus, regarding pet hair, you’ll always be dealing with a fair amount of pet hair being pulled out and off the carpet during the shampooing process. Another issue is the dirty water bin where the dirty vacuumed water is held for disposal. It’s lid uses a very light and flimsy foam gasket to keep water from leaking out past the lid and base where they meet. The gasket material will never hold up for long as we noticed it seemed to be crumbling and flaking off in spots and the lid does not press hard against the gasket anyway when clamped down and only light pressure is used to press the lid down against the gasket. This bin leaked a bit as dirty water sloshed inside of it during the shampooing and movement of the shampooer. For $200, this unit is clearly a mixed blessing. It has the brawn and power (and it is LOUD) to get the job done, but, some basic flaws that will prevent enough satisfaction for many to choose to keep it. We returned it only a day or two after trying it out. If you don’t have pets or dogs with hair/shedding, it may work out for you. 10/26/2009-Update regarding comments on vacuuming: Most any vacuum never gets all the dog hair off, but, shampooing (and any brand of shampooer), always tends to get more dog hair off carpets that any dry vacuum process will, no matter how powerful and well made the vacuum is!

I bought this cleaner yesterday after reading many reviews. My little Bissel steam cleaner stopped vacuuming up the solution after just using it 10 times, so I decided to invest in something I won’t have to replace once a year. I was nervous at first because the cleaner is very expensive compared to other cleaners, and putting it together, I was terrified it would break, as it’s made of plastic which doesn’t feel very strong to me. It was simple to put together and get started, and once I started cleaning, I knew I’d made a good choice. I cleaned the carpet in my 17 month old son’s room, and was shocked at how differently this cleaner worked compared to my Bissel. With my Bissel, an entire gallon of solution was sprayed onto my carpet, but only a few ounces of the solution was vacuumed up. I contacted Bissel and they assured me this was normal, as I have thick carpets. However, the carpets sometimes took 24 hours or more to dry, which is very frustrating. Needless to say, I hardly used the Bissel cleaner as it was a pain to wait an entire day for the carpets to dry. With this Hoover cleaner, though, nearly ALL the solution was vaccumed back out of the carpet! It took about 5 hours for the carpet to dry (very thick carpet!) and the dirty water was BLACK when I was done. I’m disgusted at what a terrible job my Bissel did, and grateful that this cleaner works so well!

What I love about this cleaner:
- You don’t have to mix the detergent in water, the machine mixes it for you, making it easier to clean small areas if needed without making an entire gallon of solution
- I’m a small woman and this machine is pretty big, but it’s easy to push, I had no problems with it
- The LED light on the front reveals conspicuous stains the carpet
- The machine rinses and partially dries the carpet, without leaving an overwhelming smell of chemicals in the room
- It comes with a 6 year limited warranty. Other Hoover cleaners come with a 1 year warranty. (Hopefully this means that they are confident with this machine, and not that they anticipate problems, I’m quite cynical)
- The dirty water bin is VERY easy to clean. My Bissel was terrible to clean, it took me half an hour to clean it because of the design.
- The suction is great, it actually vacuums up nearly all the water out of the carpet
- It actually gets my carpet clean! Finally!

What I don’t like:
- The machine appears to be sturdy, but I’m still a little nervous about all the plastic parts. I keep thinking something might break off if I’m not careful. It’s an expensive machine and I can’t afford for anything to break.
- You can use any Hoover detergent in the machine, but the the platinum detergent that comes with it is VERY expensive, much more than Hoover’s original detergent. I’ve contacted them to see what exactly the difference is and if the Platinum detergent actually works better or if the original detergent will do just as well.

Edit: Hoover got back to me and told me that the “Recommended” shampoos for this machine are the Platinum detergent and the Hoover SteamVac Ultra carpet and upholstry detergent. They said the other brands might foam too much and cause problems. The ultra detergent is about half the price of the platinum, so I bought 4 bottles of it with the buy 4, get 1 free deal on amazon. I just used the detergent last night on a fresh chocolate milk stain and it didn’t get it out, but I don’t know if the platinum would have, either. Seems like decent detergent, though! And a lot more affordable!

Extra Edit: After using this cleaner for several months, I still don’t regret buying it because it cleans so well, but I do have a few comments on cleaning it. The rotating brushes on the underside of the cleaner pick up a lot of lint, hair, and gunk that vacuums do not pick up, and the junk gets really nasty in the brushes. I’ve actually had to take my cleaner outside, turn it over, and pull everything out of the brushes. Very gross, but it keeps from spreading on my carpet. Just wanted to mention the fact. This is still a wonderful cleaner and does a great job, but cleaning the brushes is a bit more extensive than other carpet cleaners I’ve owned.

Hoover SteamVac Carpet Cleaner with Clean Surge, F5914-900

Hoover SteamVac Carpet Cleaner with Clean Surge, F5914-900

This powerful home steam vacuum saves you the expense and hassle of having to rent a steam cleaner and keeps rugs, upholstery, and bare floors (other than hardwoods) looking like new. The powerful 12-amp motor combined with five spinning brushes that operate at either high or low speed lift the usual dirt and grime out of carpets. By pulling on the trigger in the comfortable upright handle, this deep cleaner releases the included carpet/upholstery cleaner and hot tap water. For more stubborn stains or for high-traffic areas, this SteamVac also has a Clean Surge feature, which sends an extra blast of cleaning solution into the stain by simply pressing a button on the handle. When cleaning is complete, release the trigger and the SteamVac forces hot air into the cleaning path so you can do a few dry strokes over the stain. This deep cleaner has two separate water tanks to keep clean water apart from dirty water. The top tank holds the detergent and 1 gallon of hot water and automatically mixes the two so you don’t need to get your hands wet. The lower tank holds the dirty solution picked up from the carpet and unlatches to easily pour out into a sink without spilling. For cleaning stairs or upholstery, this deep cleaner has a long 8-foot hose and a special stair/upholstery nozzle that scrubs out spots. Other features of this deep cleaner include a brush indicator, which informs you that the brushes are spinning; an on/off foot pedal; a handle release pedal; and a 27-inch wraparound cord. The Hoover SteamVac is covered by a full one-year warranty.

If your new machine LEAKS, see note #2 below. I am just amazed at how many people write that their machine leaked from day one, and they returned it. It will leak if you skip a crucial one-time set-up step.

Paid $170 at Best Buy. This is my first carpet cleaner so I have nothing to compare it to except my own expectations. Even though the name is SteamVac, like all the others in this class of cleaners, there is no Steam to it. That’s just false marketing, but all the manufacturers do it, so no particular knock on Hoover.

First, let me say I’m ashamed to admit that our carpet hadn’t been cleaned in 4 years, and that we live in the country where lots of dirt gets tracked in from outside. So the carpet was pretty darn dirty. The Hoover F5914-900 did a very nice job the first time I used it – a drastically noticeable difference in the appearance of the carpet. The water in the dirty water receptacle was black. Did it return the carpet to new condition? No, impossible. Will it take another treatment or two to really get it clean? Yes, that is the price I pay for ignoring wet-cleaning the carpet for years. One of this cleaner’s best features is the ability to dry the carpet quite thoroughly. Since the front of the machine is made of clear plastic, you can see when you’re vacuuming up water. If you want to dry the carpet as much as possible, keep vacuuming until you no longer see water being pulled up. As time has passed, the SteamVac has done an excellent job of maintaining my carpets.

My only gripe is that the dirty water container fills up too quickly and should be a little bigger. Ideally, the dirty water receptacle “should” be full right as you run out of clean water. Then, you shut down, empty the dirty water, refill the clean water and back to work. But this process gets out-of-sync with the dirty water receptacle filling up before you run out of clean water. So this can be a little inconvenient, but not a show-stopper.

The machine is well constructed but it IS plastic, with lots of compartments and latches and hose holders, etc, so one must simply be careful or those things will no doubt break off.

A few other notes:
1. If you are not the type to read manuals, do read this one. Assembly and operation are easy if you sit down and read the manual through before starting. It’s not like a vacuum cleaner where you just plug it in and go.

2. My machine leaked badly BUT it was my own fault. There is a one-time only setup procedure where you squeeze the trigger and push the Clean-Surge button to lock a rod into place. Push the Clean-Surge button firmly. There may be a loud SNAP which sounds like you broke something, but you didn’t. Until you get that snap, the Clean-Surge (which releases extra water-cleaner solution) is on all the time, hence the leaking. I didn’t push the button hard enough initially, so I had the leak problem.

EDIT December 2007
Apparently many people are assuming that without a loud snap, the Clean Surge will not work. All that matters is that your machine doesn’t leak. If your SteamVac doesn’t leak, it is assembled properly and the Clean Surge will work!!! The only reason I emphasized the “snap” was because so many people were having leak problems, which are easily solved. And it’s possible that Hoover has changed the design after getting so many returns from people who didn’t read the instructions in the manual. So don’t get hung up on the snap. If your machine does leak after assembly, you know what to do.

3. ANY time it seems like there is no suction, the problem is that something is not seated properly. It is easy to snap the lid onto the dirty water container without lining it up properly, which causes a vacuum leak. If there is a vacuum leak, there is no suction at the bottom of the machine, where it is needed to suck up water from the carpet. So recheck the dirty water lid.

4. If you have velvet or velvetine furniture, do NOT use the powered tool, use the utility tool. The powered tool is too strong for delicate fabric.

5. Like others have suggested, find a cheap alternative to the Hoover brand carpet detergent. One gallon of water doesn’t clean a lot of carpet, and at 5 oz of soap per gallon, you go thru it fast.

6. Always be sure to dry vacuum your carpet with a regular vacuum cleaner first before using this machine to wash it. Be sure to remove and clean the brushes when you’re done using this machine. Otherwise hair, thread, and balled up carpet fibers will dry on them and between them. Then the brushes won’t turn. These are not “use and put away” machines like vacuum cleaners, they’re “use, clean, and put away”.

7. Here’s something I do which you *might* want to try. For a very dirty carpet, I fill a cheap plastic 2 gallon watering can (or smaller for a smaller carpet) with hot water and a tablespoon or 2 of Oxy Clean. I then sprinkle the carpet heavily, being careful not to soak it. This saves trips to the sink to load up on clean, soapy water. Then use the Hoover normally.

8. Others have suggested using boiling water. Not for me, thanks. Too dangerous to handle and unnecessary, unless you’ve spilled or tracked in grease.

After reading countless reviews here, I have concluded that the problems people have encountered are from failing to properly set up the machine initially, failing to seat the dirty water lid properly, or failing to clean the machine after use. I recommend this Hoover. It won’t perform miracles, but I think if it is not abused it will last a long time and do an excellent job of maintaining a carpet.

I have used this detergent for several months with my Hoover Steamvac and generally like it quite a bit. It is relatively poor at doing much with stains, particularly those that have been in the carpet for a long time (but then again, aren’t they all poor at that?), but for traffic lanes where there is a lot of dirt and/or grease, if you take your time and go over it a few times, it is a very good product. I will say that sometimes you have to give it a little time too. I have broken down seemingly impossibly dark areas with this shampoo, although the first pass seemed to do very little, and quickly going over it seemed to only work slowly. So, if all else fails let the water/detergent sit on the area for a little while while you work on another area and then go over it again and see if that helps. It has for me in some instances

There are a couple of things that make me give it a four instead of three, which I would give it based on its cleaning ability. The first is the smell. It is very pleasant and I have had several positive comments on how the carpets smelled after using it. Outside of Hoover’s Pet Formula Pet Detergent, this is best smelling detergent I have ever used, and I have worked with many. The other “plus” is that it is easy to remove from the carpet. After I use the detergent, I do at least one “rinse” application where I just use water to get up the residue of chemicals I left behind. With this detergent, it comes up very easily and does not require repeated applications, whereas with many others you must do the same areas many, many times to get all the residue from the carpet.

One last area I want to bring up is “browning”. Some chemicals used on carpets have an unpleasant tendency to turn your carpet brown as the chemicals dry on the carpet. To give you an example, I did a carpet and it was quite clean, with few stains remaining. A few days later, I had monstrous brown stains in a few areas on the carpet. I had used several stain removers to help with the original spots, and these were apparently the cause. So, I went over it again with water to remove the browning, but once again they came back when it dried, seemingly with almost the same intensity. Intuitively, I disliked adding more residue by using the detergent, but I figured water was not working so I had nothing to lose(and as I mentioned, this detergent has no residue problem). I used this detergent and apparently it helped remove the other chemicals more effectively and lessened the browning problem I was having. Also, this chemical does not cause browning at all. It was some other chemical I used for the stains (I used too many to know which one, as the initial stains were quite stubborn).

The only reason I am not giving this a five is because I do not want to give the impression that this is some kind of super cleaner and give false expectations. It does work pretty well, and is a very agreeable shampoo to work with, both in odor and ease in which it comes out of the carpet. It also is not harsh on skin if you get some on you. Overall I like it very much and will continue to purchase it as I need it. I probably would even if it did not clean at all, it smells so good.

I bought this shampoo about a year ago, and was kind of unsure whether to get this or the Hoover Deep Cleansing Shampoo. I was not sure which would be better for my carpets, as they had a combination of pet problems and the normal problems. So, I got both.

One difference is the fragrance. The Deep Cleansing smells very good, whereas this one is exceptional. Hoover seems to pay special attention to this detail, as these products both smell great. In terms of cleaning, though, it is very difficult to tell the difference. I know this is supposed to be good on pet stains, but it was not any better than the Deep Cleansing in my experience. If it was, it was very slight; I could not discern any difference and I did test them. Also, I could not see any difference on normal areas like stairs.

I wish I could say to use one for pet stains and the other for normal rooms, but the difference is minimal if at all. I just buy the this one because as pleasant as the Deep Cleansing scent is, this fragrance is out of this world it is so pleasant. Both detergents are very pleasant to work with as they have no residue problem (mentioned in more detail in the next paragraph), are not harsh on skin, do not brown the carpet, and of course leave a very pleasing scent. There is not much bad to be said about this product.

One thing that the shampoo says, is that it is OK to leave some residue on the carpet as it helps resist resoiling. I find this to be untrue, as detergent residue tends to attract dirt pretty aggressively and going over the carpet one time with just water after doing it with shampoo seems to leave the carpet cleaner for a long time. Professional carpet cleaners will all tell you to remove any detergent residue, except for encapsulating detergents (which this is not), and some will not even use shampoo for this exact reason. They use a pre-spray and then use hot water. Which brings up another appealing characteristic – this detergent is quite easy to get out. I would also like to mention that with this or any other cleaning solution, or just water, the temperature of the water is very important. The hotter, the better. This can often make quite a difference in the cleaning ability of the solution, so whenever possible use very hot water.

I bought the “commercial” unit to get larger holding tanks, since smaller units require annoyingly frequent refills and empties. The one gallon tank on this unit is sufficient for an average sized room. The dirty water tank is also adequate. The unit is simple enough to assemble, and works well. The tanks go on and off easily. There is no doubt that carpets look much better after cleaning, and of course the dirty water attests to the fact that a lot of soil has been removed. I personally recommend a rinse after cleaning with the detergent-containing water. To do this one must empty the cleaning solution from the tank and replace it with water only. This is not inconvenient, and is actually better than those systems that enable detergent on-and-off, since it is simpler and therefore less prone to failure.
On the negative side, I was surprised that the unit did not include an upholstery accessory, especially since the instructions for that are included. Also, it has fittings to accommodate the accessory. I spoke to the Shoplet representative about this, and after some discussion they agreed to send a new unit, from which I could remove the missing parts and return the rest. The new box arrived promptly, but also contained no upholstery accessory. It appears that for some unknown reason Hoover is shipping these out without the accessory, although it had been sold as a “carpet and upholstery cleaner” on Amazon. From the Shoplet representative I learn that Hoover says it is a carpet cleaner only, despite the aforementioned instructions, pictures, and fittings that are in the box and on the machine. You figure that one out. Shoplet gave me a partial refund, and that is the end of that. If you want an upholstery cleaner, look elsewhere besides this Hoover machine.
As another negative point, there is a clip on the cleaner handle to help hold the wire off the floor, but it is almost impossible to get the wire in it, and when you do it will pop out the first time you step on the wire. I solved this with a piece of duct tape to hold the wire more securely.
I haven’t had the unit long enough to comment on its durability.

I had the older version of this machine. I bought it about 6 years ago and after attempting to clean the rugs last month I realized it was no longer picking up the water. Opened it up and saw that the internal suction hose had split in half. That was it .. time to find another cleaner. I have had good luck with Hoovers but did a TON of research before settling on this machine. I have a dog and a toddler and both do a number on my rugs. Juice, food, crayons, spit up, urine and everything else under the sun has ended up on my carpet in the past 2 years. I did not take care of my previous Hoover so it wasn’t the best in its later life. I just brought the new one home and oh my god, the water was black. I did not think anything could bring my carpets back but this did. They are so soft and clean. I love this machine because it has a rinse button if you want to make sure you have gotten all the soap out. I use really warm water and the machine directs hot air onto the carpet as you make your passes. The carpet dried super fast and just looks fantastic. I had to fill and empty the containers 4 times for my combination living / dining room but hey, I’m not complaining now that I see the results. I also like this machine because you do not mix the detergent in with the water. This is great because if you have detergent left over you just pour it back into the bottle. Based on my previous experience, here is what I learned and can pass on to future Hoover SteamVac owners:

1. Clean your machine after each use. That means taking apart the brushes and washing out the front nozzle. This is an investment and if you want it to continue working like it did the first day, you need to take care of it.
2. Do not leave left over or dirty water in the tank when you put it away. This will wear away at the joints and increases the chances the leaks.
3. Do not leave left over detergent in the tank .. see #2.
4. Read the directions when you put it together and make sure you read how to use this rather than just take it out and turn it on. I never read the first manual and didn’t realize I should have been cleaning and using the spray button a totally different way.

This is a great machine and I hope it will last just as if not longer now that I know how to take care of and use it properly.
